“Why do recording engineers have to mess with the sound?”“Why won’t they let me hear the music in its purest form?”Audiophiles often ask these questions, but the answers are not always forthcoming. This presentation aims to answer these questions by demystifying the recording process and demonstrating it with an on-site high-resolution direct-to-stereo recording session. The presentation begins with an overview of the recording process, explaining how it has evolved and diversified to suit the aesthetics and market expectations of the many different genres of music that are available in recorded form. The presentation then focuses on the numerous methods used for making high-resolution direct-to-stereo audiophile recordings that attempt to capture a performance with as little processing as possible. Theoretical ‘ideal’ situations are described, practical real-world limitations are introduced and necessary compromises are discussed with the aim of meeting the expectations of the audiophile market.Following the lunch break, the attendees are taken through the process of making a high-resolution direct-to-stereo recording of an acoustic performance in the presentation room. After an appropriate stereo microphone technique has been chosen and placed, the attendees become the audience for the live performance recording. Following the recording is time for questions, discussion, listening sessions and more. The raw high-resolution recording will be available to attendees following the presentation, and a mastered version will be available for download at a later date.1100 to 1300: Spoken presentation1300 to 1400: Lunch Break1400 to 1600: Recording session

“Never judge a book by its cover”, says CAMERA magazine editor Paul Burrows about adventurer and film maker Matt Gilsenan. Paul continues ...”You’d never know from the calm, composed and clean-cut exterior that, on the inside, was a stark-raving bonkers, adrenalin junkie who likes nothing better than to be on the extreme side of an extreme sport.”
