Showing one of the most sonically satisfying systems available at any price. The state-of-the-art Harbeth 40.1 monitors driven by the LFD Linestage 3/Powerstage 3 amplification system with North Star Digital source and Funk Sapphire analogue source. Some exhibitors will no doubt say "it's just so unfair’ - but is it?

Announcements

Special announcement: The free (for visitors only) test CD “Bass Tones, Tastes, Textures and Transients” This will be available to visitors to the Syndicate Room #1. This disc has 12 short (less than 60 seconds each) and rather special pieces played by one of the world’s leading electric bass session professionals. These pieces are variously played on 4, 5 and 6 string basses, some solid-bodied and others electro-acoustic. Some pieces with picks, others with just fingers. This unique CD is designed to very quickly highlight the differences in bass character and performance between varying speakers and systems. With a feeble system, all the tracks sound tonally pretty much the same. On a decent system not only do all the tracks demonstrate differing textures and tones, but , the harmonics ring pure and sweet and the decay (one specific track for this) is natural rather than studio-enhanced. The sympathetic vibrations (a natural phenomenon) on adjacent un-damped strings can be clearly heard – on superior systems, and not at all on the mediocre ones! As the quality of the system improves, the distinguishing aspects of each track are readily identifiable. As far as I know, no one has produced such a ‘tool’ before for show visitors – and certainly not free. Once you’ve heard these tracks on the Harbeth/LFD/North Star system, then take it to any other exhibitor and ask them to play it. Once they’ve done so, some might well refuse to repeat the exercise. In which case you’ll be able to draw your own conclusions. No bass pedals or effects were used. The recordings are uncompressed and un-equalised. Direct injection into the recording equipment. No post-performance fiddling whatsoever. Special announcement: Harbeth For the first time outside of the USA, the extraordinary Harbeth M40.1 full range monitor will be demonstrated. Harbeth offer stunning clarity and effortless imaging to bring the real sound of the studio or concert hall to small, medium and large listening rooms in a range of attractive real-wood veneers. All are direct descendants of the publicly funded blue-skies research work undertaken by BBC engineers. All sound natural, even at low-to-medium replay levels. What sets a Harbeth from conventional speakers is the incredible resolution and micro-detail which conveys the listener deep into the heart of the recording. No matter how well you think you know your music collection you'll hear details on your Harbeths that are masked on conventional speakers. Special announcement: The Funk Firm We believe that this will be the first demonstration (rather than static display) of the extraordinary (in every respect, including price) design of Arthur Khoubesserian’s AnTi tone arm. The only reason for this not occurring, I am assured by AK, is if certain aspects of the complex Patent registration are not resolved in time. If a delay happens, then AK assures me that I’ll be amazed by his dramatic sonic upgrade to the Linn Ittock that will substitute for the AnTi. Naturally, irrespective of the choice of arm, the turntable will be the Funk Saffire. Hmm. Nice! Special announcement: LFD electronics The very new LFD MCT (MM only) phono-stage will be shown for the first time here in Syndicate Room #1. Sonically it is the intelligent match for the Funk Firm vinyl replay system and rivals any extravagantly priced offerings elsewhere. The rather beautiful; and utterly effective LFD Acrylic Isolation systems will be on display for the first time – anywhere. A masterpiece in green (just for this show) granite, stainless steel, high tensile steel, Sorbothane and acrylic. Special announcement: North Star Digital I came by the North Star equipment at the Munich High-End Show in 2005. There I heard 4 of the finest systems currently available. For historic and I guess industry ‘political’ reasons, those systems are not imported into the UK. Anyway, North Star was the chosen signal source for the truly magical Lumen White loudspeakers and were partnered by Ayon valve amplification. In every respect a truly magical combination. The North Star equipment used there was their 192 Transport and their Extremo DAC. The extraordinary thing was (apart from the majestic and all-too-wonderful sound) that the North Star source represented around just 20% of the total system cost. In the context of the show and the elevated prices of both Lumen White and Ayon, the exhibitors could have chosen anything at any price. They didn’t though. They chose North Star. And so am I. I know of nothing superior to drive the LFD/Harbeth combination. Literally nothing
